A Smarter Grille

A white Range Rover Evoque with black accents, featuring modern headlights, a front grille, and alloy wheels, set against a plain, dark background.

Connecting intelligence, aerodynamic efficiency, and driver experience.

With increasing sustainability pressure to improve aerodynamic efficiency, Land Rover sought new ways for vehicles to travel further while consuming less energy. Working alongside Magna International's engineering team, we led the industrial design vision for the Range Rover Evoque grille. The solution balanced the iconic grilles legacy aesthetic with intelligence and style.

A curated workshop brought engineering, design and strategy teams together over shared goals, challenges and opportunities.

Two designers in a modern office working on a car design project. One person stands looking at images on a whiteboard, while the other crouches examining sketches and photos on wall-mounted boards covered with images, diagrams, and notes. There is a laptop and supplies on a nearby table, and a large format printer or plotter along the wall.

An intelligent surface that actively manages airflow.

As driving conditions change, the grille responds. In Eco mode, it flattens to reduce drag; in Sport mode, it opens to increase cooling.

The team explored shape-memory alloys and solenoid motors for vent articulation, arriving at a polymer louver capable of rotating on a curve and sealing airflow.
